Tokyo, Nov 10, 2005 (JCN) - NEC announced on November 9 the results of its recent research on a carbon nanohorn, a type of carbon nanotube 2-5nm in diameter and 40-50nm in length. When several hundreds of nanohorns are aggregated, they form a sphere with a diameter of 100nm.
In collaboration with the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Cancer Institute of the Japan Foundation for Cancer Research (JFCR), NEC has encapsulated cisplatin, a kind of antitmor agent, into carbon nanohorns.
Using electron microscopy, the three partners have observed that the encapsulated cisplatin maintains its molecular structure and forms a cluster of 2nm in the nanohorn.
Further, cell experiments have confirmed that the agent is gradually released from the nanohorn and kills cancer cells.
These findings indicate that carbon nanohorns have potential to become a drug carrier in future cancer treatment. Going forward, NEC, the JST and the JFCR will proceed with research with the aim of contributing to the development of a drug delivery system.
