| National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) Develops Optical Control Device Structure for Quantum Computers |
Tokyo, Dec 19, 2005 (JCN) - The Ultrafast Optoelectronic Devices Group of the Photonics Research Institute of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has developed a basic structure of an optical control device for use in quantum computers.
The device is the world's first optical control quantum computer device that has had multi-bit capability.
The research group has used a coupled quantum dot structure which has two or more quantum dots layered at a short distance. An exciter enclosed in each quantum dot is treated as a quantum bit to enable the structure to be used as a multi-bit device.
The group has employed molecular beam epitaxy to create first a quantum dot structure made of InAs (indiaum arsenide)/GaAs (gallium arsenide) and then a metal mask with a 0.2-micron-diameter opening in the structure as well as an electrode to which voltage can be applied.
The research results are published in the December 19 issue of Applied Physics Letters.
