AIST Succeeds in Encapsulating and Stabilizing Beta-Carotene in Carbon Nanotubes

Tokyo, Feb 10, 2006 (JCN) - The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) announced on February 8 that its Nanotechnology Research Institute has succeeded in encapsulating and stabilizing beta-carotene in carbon nanotubes.

AIST has encapsulated beta-carotene in HiPco single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), a type of carbon nanotube currently marketed by Carbon Nanotechnologies Inc. Beta-carotene is a photofucntional molecule which is easily deteriorated by light.

AIST has confirmed that the stability of beta-carotene is greatly improved when encapsulated in carbon naotubes. Specifically, it has elucidated that encapsulation and stabilization mostly effectively works at around 70 degrees centigrade.

A kind of pi-conjugated molecule, beta-carotene is considered a successful candidate for next-generation optical device materials. In particular, it is expected to be applied to nonlinear optical devices.

Going forward, AIST will proceed with research to verify the optical functionality, safety and durability of carbon nanotubes encapsulating beta-carotene with a view to developing fading-resistant inks.
