Tokyo, Feb 20, 2006 (JCN) - The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science (AIST) announced on February 16 that it has developed a fluorescent quantum dot with superior properties.
The On-Site Sensing and Diagnosis Research Laboratory, one of the AIST entities, has synthesized a water-soluble and highly-luminescent quantum dot. Made of cadmium selenide (CdSe), the quantum dot is 3-6nm in diameter and excels in size distribution and photochemical stability.
Further, the lab has created a hybrid material by combining the quantum dot with protein avidin and biomolecule biotin. Used with biotin-labeled antibodies in the immunoblot analyses, the new hybrid material can detect proteins with high sensitivity.
Based on these finding, AIST aims to develop an electrophoretic chip that can identify natural proteins. Also, it plans to devise a surface processing technique for the quantum dot and employ it in the evaluation process of food manufacturing.
Details of the research are published in US scientific magazines Journal of American Chemistry Society and Analytical Chemistry. In addition, AIST will present the details at nanotech 2006: International Nanotechnology Exhibition & Conference, to be held at the Tokyo Big Sight from February 21 to 23.
