| National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) Succeeds in Continuous Synthesis of Diesel Fuel |

Tokyo, Mar 27, 2006 (JCN) - The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) announced on March 23 that the Biomass Technology Research Center (BTRC), one of its research entities, has succeeded in continuously synthesizing diesel fuel from wood.
Specifically, the BTRC has combined gasification reactions to cause carbon purification and Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis to continuously synthesize diesel fuel from woody biomass.
The BTRC expects that this achievement will contribute to the wider use of biomass resources and, in particular, will be applied to use for compact and portable plants for manufacturing diesel fuel from woody biomass.
Going forward, the BTRC plans to create a compact and portable prototype for bench tests as well as develop a catalyst for FT synthesis in order to improve the yield and quality of diesel fuel.
