Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories Obtains New Knowledge on Drug-metabolizing Enzyme Cytochrome P450

Tokyo, May 9, 2006 (JCN) - Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories (SNBL) has obtained new knowledge on cytochrome P450 (CYP), a drug-metabolizing enzyme, through collaboration with Hokkaido University.

Specifically, the two partners have discovered CYP2C76, a molecular species of CYP specifically found in monkeys that have a metabolic pattern similar to human.

Further, they have confirmed that CYP2C76 metabolizes drugs and is frequently expressed in the liver. SNBL has already filed application for a patent on these findings.

Details of the findings are presented in Molecular Pharmacology, a scientific magazine published by the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, under the title "CYP2C76, a novel CYP in cynomolgus monkey, is a major CYP2C in liver, metabolizing tolbutamide and testosterone".
