Tokyo, June 20, 2006 - (JCN Newswire) - JCB, the only international payment brand based in Asia, and its subsidiary JCB International, in cooperation with the Guam Visitors Bureau, will be launching phase two of the successful True Guam Campaign from 1 July 2006 through 31 January 2007.
The first phase of the True Guam Campaign ran from 16 December 2005 through 31 May 2006. A cooperative endeavor between the JCB payment brand and the Guam Visitors Bureau, this innovative project promoted Guam as an attractive destination among JCB's 56 million cardmembers and motivated increased spending on Guam with the objective of strengthening the local tourist economy.
The number of visitors using their JCB card on Guam during the campaign period (figures are as of the end of April) was 6,500 more than the same period last year. While this did not meet the initial target of an additional 10,000 visitors using their JCB card, total JCB card sales volume increased significantly by 500 million yen, indicating the level of visitor interest in the campaign and the increase in opportunities to use the JCB card on Guam.
Major factors in this success were effective use of JCB, GVB, and participating business' own media including web sites, JCB member magazines, and in-store displays on Guam to raise awareness of the campaign through a wide array of channels, as well as through the efforts of participating local merchants. The True Guam Campaign is the first time the Guam Visitors Bureau has supported a joint promotion between Japanese and local businesses, and the success of phase one of the campaign shows that public and private sectors are working together effectively to attract more tourists.
Phase two of the True Guam Campaign will be even more exciting than the first, thanks to the alliance of three major corporations in Japan and nine commercial enterprises on Guam. In particular, participating businesses have significantly increased the number of prizes available to over 13,000. In this phase of the campaign, JCB cardmembers only have to show their card to receive a special gift (see 'more information about the True Guam Campaign,' below). Over the seven-month period of the campaign, JCB has set a target of an increase in JCB card sales of 700 million yen over last year, or 100 million yen each month. In addition, the Guam Visitors Bureau will be providing full-scale support for this promotion.
The number of Japanese travelers to Guam is increasing, with about 950,000 visitors in 2005 (5.4% more than the prior year). Currently more than 70 charter flights from Japan to Guam are scheduled for the upcoming summer season, and Japanese tourist figures are expected to rise. JCB anticipates increasing registration for the True Guam Campaign as well.
