Tokyo, Oct 4, 2007 (Jiji Press) - Japanese electronics makers are successively launching healthcare equipment tailored for the prevention of metabolic syndrome, a type of obesity linked to strokes and other illnesses.
The makers bank on demand arising from new rules which, beginning next spring, will oblige corporate health insurance unions to carry out medical checkups to detect metabolic syndrome risks among workers aged 40 or older and offer healthcare advice.
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. <6752> is due to launch in November a small instrument for attaching to one's waist to measure calorie consumption through a sensor that detects his or her movements.
The data from the product, dubbed Acti Marker, can be uploaded to a personal computer and be analyzed using special software.
Matsushita plans to sell the product for 20,790 yen, chiefly targeting corporate health insurance unions.
Hitachi Ltd. <6501> in September launched small, easy-to-handle equipment for blood chemical tests, called Metabolizer.
The equipment instantly gives test results on fat and sugar levels as well as liver functions. It costs 3,045,000 yen.
Sharp Corp. <6753> and 32 other companies are developing a unified system for transferring and storing data collected by healthcare equipment of various specifications.
If realized, the technology will allow households to send the data in blood pressure monitors and other equipment wirelessly to health insurance unions for analysis.
