Tokyo, June 18, 2008 (Jiji Press) - Sales of flat-panel television sets and DVD recorders in Japan each scored hefty growth in the first half of this month, due to the approach of the Beijing Olympic Games, market research company BCN Inc. said Wednesday.
In the June 1-15 period, flat-panel TV sales surged 35.3 pct from a year earlier in volume and 23.0 pct in value, according to the Tokyo-based firm. Demand was particularly brisk for 40-inch models.
Plasma display panel TVs saw a 14.6 pct rise in sales value to snap a downtrend since last October, while liquid crystal display TVs enjoyed a 24.6 pct sales surge.
DVD recorders showed a 25.2 pct increase in sales volume and a 38.3 pct surge in value. Recorders using the Blu-ray Disc format accounted for 53.9 pct of the total.
