Sony PS3 Seen to Turn Profitable by End of FY 2008
Los Angeles, July 17, 2008 (Jiji Press) - The Sony Corp. <6758> group's operations related to its PlayStation 3 video game machine are expected to turn profitable by the end of fiscal 2008, a senior group official said Wednesday.
In an interview with Jiji Press, Kazuo Hirai, president and chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., said that it seems difficult to achieve profitability from the game console alone by the end of the business year.
But the overall PS3 operations, including related equipment and game software, are expected to swing to the black, he said.
The PS3 operations have been in the red due to heavy development costs. But recently, parts procurement costs have been falling, according to Hirai.
At the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, game show here Tuesday, the Sony group announced the launch of movie and television program distribution services for PS3 users in the United States.
Hirai said that the group is preparing to launch the same services in Japan and Europe, adding that an announcement on the matter will be made when ready. The Sony group's basic strategy is to provide same-quality services globally, Hirai said.
