Matsushita Battery to Build World's Largest Lithium-Ion Battery Plant

Osaka, July 30, 2008 (Jiji Press) - Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. said Wednesday it will spend about 100 billion yen to build a new lithium-ion battery plant with the world's top output capacity in this western Japan city.

The wholly owned subsidiary of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. <6752> will begin constructing the plant in December with a view to launching the production of batteries for notebook personal computers and mobile phones in April 2010, the company said.

The launch of the plant, which will have an annual output capacity of 600 million units, will triple the company's overall capacity for lithium-ion batteries now totaling 300 million units.

In addition, Matsushita Battery will invest about 23 billion yen to upgrade three existing plants.

Through the series of investments, the company will seek to win a global share of 20 pct or higher in the lithium-ion battery market, President Naoto Noguchi said.
