Nissan Releases Fully Remodeled Murano SUV

Tokyo, Sept 29, 2008 (Jiji Press) - Nissan Motor Co. <7201>released a fully remodeled version of its Murano luxury sport-utility vehicle in Japan on Monday.

High-grade SUVs are fighting an uphill battle as consumers are increasingly shifting to fuel-efficient smaller vehicles amid higher gasoline prices.

But Nissan Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga said the firm will actively promote the vehicle, noting that some Japanese consumers still want premium vehicles.

The remodeled Murano has achieved improved fuel efficiency with the adoption of a newly developed constantly variable transmission system and reduced engine friction.

The second-generation model can travel 800 meters more on a liter of gasoline than the first-generation Murano that went on sale in Japan in September 2004, according to the automaker.

The new Murano, targeted mainly at men in their 30s, 40s and 50s, is priced at between 3,150,000 yen and 4,042,500 yen, about 200,000 to 300,000 yen more expensive than the first model.

Nissan hopes that sales of the new Murano will reach 900 units a month.

Nissan launched the new Murano in the United States in January. It plans to sell the vehicle in some 170 countries.
