Panasonic Develops 85-inch Full HD Plasma Display; Measuring Just 99 mm in Thickness, Shipment to Start this Fall

Panasonic Develops 85-inch Full HD Plasma Display
Osaka, June 17, 2009 - (JCN Newswire) - Panasonic Corporation, a leader in the high definition plasma display technology, announced the development of an 85-inch full high-definition (HD) plasma display designed for professional users. The new display, to be showcased at InfoComm 09 from June 17 to 19 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, will become available through business channels worldwide starting from Japan and the US this fall.

Panasonic has led large-size high-quality display market globally, introducing the world's largest(1) 103-inch plasma display to the market in 2006. Panasonic's large displays have received global acclaim in a wide range of commercial and consumer applications from business and public signage, education, broadcasting stations to home theater. With the move towards digitization in the broadcasting and content industries as well as convergence of communications technologies, there are increasingly diversified demands for large-size flat-panel displays. Based on its know-how in producing large-size panels that was cultivated with the 103-inch PDP development, Panasonic has developed the new 85-inch full HD plasma display integrating the latest high picture quality technology.

The 85-inch display, having a screen size equivalent to four 42-inch panels, incorporates Panasonic's NeoPDP energy-efficient, double luminance technology(2). With a moving picture resolution of 1,080 lines(3) and a stunning contrast ratio of 40,000:1(4) (max. 2,000,000:1(5)) - both the world's highest to date(6) - the panel delivers blur-free, crisp, true-to-life images with deep, rich blacks. With a viewing area of 1,889 mm (W) x 1,062 mm (H), about the same size as commonly-used projection screens, it is big enough to show a person in full size when installed vertically. The display measures only 99 mm in thickness.

The large and thin plasma display not only delivers dynamic images, but is outfitted with many convenient features for professional uses. With LAN (PJLink)(7) terminals, it supports LAN control that enables connection with other PJLink compatible imaging systems as well as remote control of the display and input signal check. The display also features Panasonic's own Function Slots that let users to add up to three different terminal boards(8) such as DVI and Dual Link HD-SDI, according to their needs.

The 85-inch full HD display expands Panasonic's large-size display line-up. Compared to the 103 inches, it is 30 mm thinner in profile and about 30 percent lighter per square inch and about 40 percent lighter in total weight (Approx. 130 kg) - achieving mobility and installation ease comparable to the 65-inches. The improvement on luminance efficiency made downsizing and high integration of parts possible, resulting in the reductions of thickness and weight.

Panasonic continues to deliver high-quality displays that will respond to versatile needs of its customers, including impactful presentations in board rooms and video conferences and digital signage. The company also continues to pursue greener products. Panasonic has become the first company to completely eliminate lead from plasma display panels. Its plasma TVs have a long life of 100,000 hours.

(1) As of July 10, 2006 as a plasma display panel. (World's largest plasma commercially available as of June 17, 2009.)
(2) Compared between Panasonic's current and 2007 full HD models in the same sizes.
(3) Moving picture resolution indicates the motion display performance by number of lines which human eyes can recognize. (Measured by Advanced PDP Development Center Corporation Method)
(4) Dark-area contrast that can be displayed simultaneously on the same screen.
(5) The ratio of the brightness of a screen displaying an all-white signal to the brightness of a screen displaying an
all-black signal.
(6) As of June 17, 2009. Based on the company's own research.
(7) A standard protocol for operating and controlling multiple projectors.
(8) Terminal boards are optional except for the standard equipment (Standard equipment differs according to region).
