Fujitsu Selected as Vendor for Development of NTT DOCOMO's LTE Mobile Data Communications Terminal - JCN Newswire
Fujitsu Selected as Vendor for Development of NTT DOCOMO's LTE Mobile Data Communications Terminal

Tokyo, Oct 2, 2009 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu today announced that it has been selected by NTT DOCOMO, INC. as a vendor for developing a mobile data communications terminal based on LTE(1) technology, a next-generation mobile communications standard.

In addition to being LTE-compliant(2), it is anticipated that the mobile terminal will be able to take advantage of HSPA/W-CDMA (3G) and GSM/GPRS (2G) networks. The mobile terminal will also support the ExpressCard standard, the latest in PC card interfaces, making it possible for the mobile terminal to be installed in a variety of products, such as notebook PCs and netbooks, for high-speed communications in mobile environments.

As part of its mobile phone development plan, Fujitsu is taking an active role in promoting the use of mobile phones that access the Internet. By speedily furnishing a mobile terminal for NTT DOCOMO's planned LTE service, Fujitsu will contribute to the expansion of wireless broadband in the future 4G mobile communications market.

Fujitsu plans to exhibit a concept design of its LTE mobile data communications terminal at its booth during the ITU Telecom World 2009 international exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 5-9, 2009.

(1) LTE: LTE stands for Long Term Evolution, a mobile communications method whose specifications were determined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards group. The technology will allow for a maximum downlink transmission speed of over 100Mbps. DOCOMO is positioning its 3.9G technology under the proposed name of "Super 3G".
(2) LTE-compliant: On October 1, 2009, NTT DOCOMO, INC., NEC Corporation, Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd., and Fujitsu Limited plan on launching their LTE-enabled "LTE-PF" communications platform.
