NYK's Competence Management System First in Asia to Be Certified

Tokyo, Nov 2, 2009 (JCN) - NYK Shipmanagement Pte. Ltd. of Singapore, a wholly owned subsidiary of NYK, became the first ship manager in Asia to receive certification by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for a competence management system (CMS) that was deemed to meet DNV's strict standards.

CMS is a systematic method of education and training designed to minimize any gap between the competence level required by a company and the level of each individual seafarer on board.

By introducing the CMS, NYKSM will be able to utilize data from evaluations to systematically assign seafarers to training programs. Moreover, by establishing a uniform database, the evaluation of seafarers throughout the entire company can be realized.

This system will be deployed on all 24 tankers managed by NYKSM to uniformly control the education and training of seafarers aboard those vessels. NYKSM is also planning to expand the system throughout its entire managed fleet of 104 ships.
