NEC to Conduct E-voting Experiment

Tokyo, Apr 26, 2002 (JCN) - NEC Solutions will conduct Japan's first e-voting experiment in the town of Sonobe in Kyoto Prefecture on May 3 and 4.

The experiment will use 800 town residents as test voters. The town will provide them with home PCs to access the Internet.
The experiment will use Digishuff, an e-voting software program developed by NEC, to enable the participants to vote over the Internet.

The software features the company's unique encryption technology to protect confidentiality in voting and to make the validity of vote counting verifiable to third-party observers.

In this mock election, participants will cast ballots for Japan's prime minister from among three popular warriors from the 16th Century.
