Tokyo, May 16, 2001 - (JCN Newswire) - Nippon Television Network Corporation and KDD Media Will Corporation jointly developed "HDTV (720p/1080i) Picture Quality Assessment System" (in charge = Hidehiko Kikuchi and Satoshi Miyabayashi of Nippon Television Network Corp., New Technology Research & Planning Headquarters, and Takahiro Hamada of KDD Media Will Corp.). They received "The 54th Motion Picture and Television Engineering Society of Japan Prize," which was determined at the Motion Picture and Television Engineering Society of Japan's regular executive board meeting on March 28th, and awarded at the usual general meeting held on Wednesday, May 16th.
"The 54th Motion Picture and Television Engineering Society of Japan Prize" is one of the top authoritative awards in the field as it requires strict evaluation, including an actual on-the-spot examination by a hand-selected examination committee consisting of 22 of today's most highly qualified engineers.
The award-winning HDTV Picture Quality Assessment System corresponds to both formats of HDTV, which are 1080i and 720p. It can carry out real time measurement of picture quality degradation, according to the Double-Stimulus Continuous Quality-Scale Method (DSCQS method), which required tremendous time and effort to develop. This system can be used as a picture quality analyzer for digital compressed VCR's and HDD servers, or for detection of picture quality degradation of digital broadcasting by the rain. Moreover, since it has the evaluation model of the progressive scanning system inside, a new addition to the interlaced scan, correspondence to the four systems of digital broadcasting of Japan and 1080p can also be attained by using a picture mapping method.
This equipment is already in use at Nippon Television Network, BS Nippon Corp., NTT research institute, etc., and is achieving positive results. We expect to see HDTV digital broadcast systems become a popular system in Japan as well as overseas.
