Tokyo, June 27, 2003 - (JCN Newswire) - In July 2003, Sharp Corporation will establish its first R&D center in Shanghai, China. Sharp Electronics (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (SES*) Appliance Products Research & Development Center will work closely with Sharp's Appliance Systems' product development division (in Osaka, Japan) in the research, design, and development of appliances like air conditioning equipment and washing machines. Sharp plans to strengthen the SES R&D center the nucleus of home appliances development in Asia.
Sharp has so far done all product design and development in Japan, while its bases in China and Southeast Asian countries, in addition to those in Japan, have been manufacturing home appliances. With the establishment of the SES R&D center in Shanghai, home to Shanghai Sharp Electronics Co., Ltd. (SSEC) (established in 1992 as a home appliance manufacturing base), Sharp aims to raise the expertise level of Chinese researchers and technical staff and quickly develop one-of-a-kind products best suited to the needs of users in China, a country where Sharp is stepping up its manufacturing and sales activities.
The R&D center will be established inside SES, which started up in April 2003, with 12 employees working on air conditioner development. More development staff for other products will be hired next fiscal year, with the aim of having 50 employees by fiscal 2005.
