Canon's New PIXUS i-series Bubble Jet Printers Deliver Greatly Enhanced Photo-image Quality

Tokyo, Feb 19, 2004 - (JCN Newswire) - Canon today announced in Japan the introduction of three new Bubble Jet printers from the company's acclaimed PIXUS i-series that offer greatly enhanced image quality for superlative photo-printing performance: the portable-model Canon Bubble Jet Printer PIXUS 80i, the eight-color A3+ system PIXUS 9900i, and the six-color A4-model PIXUS 960i.

Canon's new PIXUS i-series lineup employs New "MicroFine Droplet Technology" to achieve exceptional photo-imaging performance through the precise delivery of microscopic ink droplets that are consistent in shape, size and density. The printers also feature New Canon Digital Photo Color, a proprietary image-processing technology that ensures the faithful reproduction of digital photo images, achieving color performance that matches human preference. The technology enables the production of beautiful, vivid images, particularly in shots featuring landscapes and people.

Supporting the PictBridge industry standard, the new PIXUS models not only output
photos directly from Canon's range of Direct Print-enabled digital still cameras and video camcorders, but also print from any PictBridge-compatible camera or
camcorder, regardless of brand, with just a single USB-cable connection. For professional-looking results, edge-to-edge printing enables anyone to easily produce true borderless photo prints in sizes from L (127 x 89 mm) up to the maximum paper size handled by each printer. Moreover, Canon's High Intensity Color Inks realize brilliant, richly graded color images and, when printing on Canon Professional Photo Paper, durable color-fastness capable of lasting up to 100 years if stored in a photo album, and over 25 years when displayed in a photo frame.

PIXUS 80i
The new Canon PIXUS 80i portable printer replaces the lightweight, compact 50i
which, released in March 2003, has been highly acclaimed for its innovative design
and outstanding performance.

Building on the strong features of its predecessor, the PIXUS 80i offers dramatically improved photo-image quality. Featuring a new printhead incorporating Canon's Super Photo Nozzles, which ensure the precise delivery of microscopic prescribed-volume ink droplets as small as two picoliters, the printer delivers outstanding 4,800 x 1,200 dot-per-inch (dpi) image resolution with maximal clarity and smoothness. The new printhead also yields improved output speed, enabling the 80i to produce standard A4 documents at up to 14 pages per minute (ppm) in black and white, and 10 ppm in color, as well as full-color borderless L-size photo prints in around 70 seconds.

Canon's new portable printer realizes enhanced connectivity for users on the run. In addition to compatibility with the PictBridge direct photo-printing standard, the
model offers an optional BU-10 Bluetooth Unit for high-speed wireless printing from Bluetooth-enabled PCs. The model also features a built-in IrDA infrared transmission port, enabling users of compatible camera-equipped mobile phones to use Canon's Printbeam function to print photos as well as e-mails, address lists and schedules stored in their phones. The PIXUS 80i also offers expanded Printbeam print options, providing a total of 16 layout styles to choose from.

PIXUS 9900i
The new PIXUS 9900i A3+ photo printer is the flagship model in Canon's PIXUS i-series. The new system features eight ink colors, adding individual red and green ink tanks to the cyan, magenta, yellow, black, photo cyan and photo magenta commonly used in top-level six-color photo printers. As a result, the 9900i produces
images with color characteristics closely matching those of positive photographic film, achieving exceptional contrast, clarity, saturation and image depth.

Incorporating a 6,144 nozzle high-density printhead, with 768 nozzles for each of the eight colors, the PIXUS 9900i couples outstanding 4,800*1 x 2,400 dpi photo image resolution with high-speed print performance, producing a full-color A4 photo print in around 35 seconds and an A3 print in around 65 seconds*2. Also, Canon's New "MicroFine Droplet Technology" ejects microscopic two-picoliter droplets in every print mode for highly detailed, smoothly graded images free of graininess.

The new printer also ships with Canon's Easy-PhotoPrint 2.1 application software, which works directly with Canon's new Digital Photo Professional software for Canon professional digital SLR cameras*3. While Digital Photo Professional enables high-speed processing of RAW image data, Easy-PhotoPrint 2.1 is capable of automatically identifying color-space information and transferring it accurately to the printer. As a result, users can efficiently process high-resolution images, including RAW data, and faithfully reproduce the broad color range of image data obtained in Adobe RGB.

The Canon PIXUS 9900i printer features a built-in disk-printing unit that enables high-quality printing directly on the surface of recordable CDs and DVDs for quick, easy and creative labeling. And, supporting workflow needs, the system incorporates fast USB 2.0 Hi-Speed and Firewire interfaces, in addition to a conventional USB port, enabling efficient data transmission as well as the simultaneous connection of
up to three computers.

PIXUS 960i
The new PIXUS 960i joins the i-series lineup alongside the flagship A4-model PIXUS 990i released in October 2003. Featuring six ink colors, the PIXUS 960i delivers microscopic 2-picoliter ink droplets in every mode to produce highly defined photo prints in exceptional 4,800 x 2,400 dpi image resolution. In addition to delivering outstanding image quality, the system's 3,072-nozzle high-density printhead realizes high output speeds, producing an A4-size photo print in around one minute.

The PIXUS 960i printer incorporates a covered photo-paper tray, which is set into the main sheet-feeder. Accommodating a variety of photo-paper sizes, the tray allows users to alternate between print modes without having to change paper. The model also ships with a disk-printing unit which, slotting tidily into the front of the unit, enables users to print directly on the surface of recordable CDs and DVDs. Further enhancing performance is a range of options, including the Auto Duplex Unit DPU-10, which automatically reroutes the page for properly formatted two-sided printing, and the 250-sheet Paper Feed Cassette PFC-10, which increases the paper capacity of the system to 400 sheets.

*1 Maximum resolution of 4,800 x 1,200 dpi used at the bottom edge of the paper
*2 When printer is set to "Super Photo Paper; fast"
*3 Compatible camera models: EOS-1D, EOS-1Ds, and the new EOS-1D Mark II, available from late April 2004
