Tokyo, Sept 28, 2004 - (JCN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701; NASDAQ: NIPNY), National Institute of Information and Communications Technology ("NiCT"), and Japan Science and Technology Agency ("JST") have jointly succeeded in realizing the world's fastest 100 kbps 40-km-long quantum cryptography key generation, far surpassing previous records. Achieved through a newly developed quantum cryptography system adopting a novel method, this key generation enables secure network communication supported by the principles of quantum mechanical physics. Due to fast key generation (up to 100 kbps) for a 40-km-long transmission, this system can realize quantum cryptography transmissions in optical networks in metropolitan areas, and is expected to contribute to the realization of an optical fiber network system requiring advanced safety levels to prevent against code-breaking in the future.
System optimization was enabled by using a low-noise photon receiver (jointly developed in 2003 by NEC and the Imai Quantum Computation Information Project (ERATO, JST),) and an alternative-shift phase modulation method (developed by NEC under the NiCT project 'Research and Development on Quantum Cryptographic Technology'.)
The main features of this system are as follows:
Adoption of an NEC-original APD device to the low-noise photon receiver, and lowering of after-pulse probability which limits fast cryptography key generation.
Stable cryptography key generation under an ambient temperature range of -5 to +75 degrees by substituting the conventional Faraday-Mirror system with a novel alternative-shift phase modulation system.
Air-cooled, small-sized, low-noise photon receiver.
Present cryptography systems do not guarantee unconditional safety as their security is based on the limited calculation abilities of present computers, however, quantum cryptography provides unconditionally secure network communication and safety, even when these capabilities are infinite. This is because quantum cryptography is not reliant on calculation capability but on the principle of physics. Therefore, its development is now attracting considerable attention on a global scale.
NEC's quantum cryptography research is accelerating with each new achievement putting us ahead and allowing us to contribute to overall development in the field of quantum cryptography.
