| Sapporo Breweries, Shimadzu, Hiroshima University Jointly Develop Hydrogen Generation Technology Using Discarded Breads |

|
Tokyo, Oct 12, 2004 (JCN) - Sapporo Breweries (TSE: 2501), Shimadzu Corporation (TSE: 7701) and Hiroshima University announced that their joint research group has developed an innovative hydrogen generation technology.
Called Hydrogen Methane Two-Stage Fermentation, the latest technology generates hydrogen from discarded bread highly efficiently. By properly controlling fermentation, the technology can produce biohydrogen and methane separately. The biohydrogen that is generated does not contain sulfur, and is usable in fuel cells.
The industry-academia group will conduct further research with the aim of commercializing the technology using a pilot testing facility beginning in mid-October.
