Tokyo Electric to Build Large Solar Plants in Kawasaki

Tokyo, Oct 20, 2008 (Jiji Press) - Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> on Monday agreed with the city of Kawasaki to build two large-scale solar power plants.

The new plants in the city south of Tokyo will be among the largest solar facilities in Japan, together generating about 21 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, equivalent to the amount used annually by some 5,900 households, the power firm said.

The company estimates that the solar power generation will have the effects of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by about 8,900 tons annually.

Tokyo Electric will begin construction in fiscal 2009, which begins next April, with operations slated to start in fiscal 2011. One plant will be located at a site owned by itself and the other at a city landfill area.
The construction costs, which have not been revealed, could total as much as 10 billion yen.

At any one time, the two plants will have a maximum capacity of around 20,000 kilowatts. The figure is below the 28,000 kilowatts projected under plans of Kansai Electric Power Co. <9503> and Sharp Corp. <6753>, but only 10,000 kilowatts of this total will be available for electricity supplies to outside companies and households, far below the level of the Kawasaki plants.

In addition, the city of Kawasaki plans to establish a facility to promote photovoltaic generation in the landfill area.
