Meat & Livestock Australia Delivers Fifth Donation of Australian Hay to Tohoku Farmers
Ongoing "Together With Japan" initiative continues to support the redevelopment of the Tohoku beef industry

Tokyo, Dec 12, 2011 - (JCN Newswire) - As the latest in its "Together with Japan" program of support for the Japanese beef industry, Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) has provided its fifth delivery of hay donated by Australian farmers to assist their colleagues in Tohoku. The donation of forty bales (1 tonne) was today received by Miyagi Agricultural High School (Natori, Miyagi), which was wiped out by the March tsunami.

MLA Regional Manager Japan Melanie Brock, said, "MLA and Australia are committed to continuing support, and we are working particularly closely with our colleagues across the cattle industry in Tohoku to assess their needs, and together rebuild. I have personally found it an inspiring experience to connect with the resilient people of the region. Miyagi Agricultural High School is home to a heifer that was washed out to sea by the disaster and subsequently saved - this is just one example of the inspiring people and events we have witnessed in our support efforts."

The donation builds on a visit by students from Miyagi Agricultural High School and other schools in the hard hit region to Australia, in a knowledge sharing initiative between the next generation of farmers from Japan and Australia in September of this year.

The program of hay donations began when Japanese farmers from Fukushima and Iwate prefectures, Shin Yamada, Hiroshi Sano and Mutsuko Ozawa, visited Australia at the launch of the "Together with Japan" program in May 2011. There, asked by MLA executives what support they needed most, the response was unanimous, "Hay."

This latest marks the fifth round of hay donations by MLA to cattle farmers in the region, and MLA is committed to working with local farmers to provide further support where it is needed.

Australia's Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig and President, Cattle Council of Australia Andrew Ogilvie visited Japan and, with Australian Ambassador to Japan Bruce Miller and MLA Regional Manager Japan Melanie Brock, visited Miyagi Agricultural High School to mark the donation.
