Tokyo, Jan 11, 2008 (Jiji Press) - Renesas Technology Corp. said Friday it will expand its back-end process plant in Malaysia to bolster its analog and discrete semiconductor business. Renesas will spend about one billion yen to add a facility to group company Renesas Semiconductor (Kedah) Sdn. Bhd. The operations of the new facility will begin in August. As a result, the total monthly production of analog and discrete semiconductors in Malaysia, including products made at another group company Renesas Semiconductor (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., will double to 1.2 billion units by the end of fiscal 2009. In addition, Renesas Semiconductor (Malaysia) spun off its chip design department and created a new company, Renesas Semiconductor Design (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., on Jan. 1. The unit's workforce will be doubled to 200 by the end of fiscal 2009. Annual sales of analog and discrete semiconductors, used mainly in power supply units of personal computers, reach nearly 100 billion yen, or about 10 pct of the Japanese firm's annual consolidated sales. Renesas hopes to increase the sales figure to 150 billion yen before fiscal 2010.
