Nippon Yusen, Nippon Oil to Use Solar Power to Move Cargo Ship

Tokyo, Aug 26, 2008 (Jiji Press) - Nippon Yusen K.K. <9101> and Nippon Oil Corp. <5001> said Tuesday they will jointly conduct an experiment to use solar power generation to replace some of the electricity needed to move large cargo vessels.

The step is part of an effort to reduce carbon dioxide emissions involved in sea transport.

Based on the experiment, Nippon Yusen aims to develop vehicle-carrying vessels by 2010 that are equipped with solar panels and consume half the energy of conventional vessels and containerships that use 30 pct less energy.

Nippon Oil, meanwhile, hopes to commercialize a solar power generation system for vessels in three to five years.

Currently, solar power is used only in crew quarters.

In the experiment, the two firms will install a 40-kilowatt solar battery in a vehicle-carrying vessel to be built in December and check the amount of carbon dioxide emissions and durability of the system against salt and wind damage.

They are predicting that the solar battery can replace up to 6.5 pct of the vessel's electricity produced by burning fuel oil and reduce one to 2 pct of its carbon dioxide emissions.

Toyota Motor Corp. <7203> will cooperate in the project as the owner of the cargo.
