KDDI Announces '9555' Iridium Satellite Mobile Phone

Tokyo, Feb 26, 2009 - (JCN Newswire) - KIDDI is pleased to announce the '9555', a new handheld satellite phone model for its Iridium satellite phone service. Among the various Iridium satellite mobile phones, the 9555 is not only the smallest and most advanced but also the easiest to use, making it even more like regular mobile phones.

Making use of 66 satellites orbiting at an altitude of 780km, the Iridium satellite mobile phone service is available anywhere on the Earth. Natural conversations with little delay are possible because of these low-earth orbiting satellites.

Communication between two Iridium satellite phones makes use only of satellites without passing through land networks. Communication between an Iridium satellite mobile phone and other phones, such as landline phones or other mobile phones, is handled through a land earth station in the U.S., which provides the connection to a general phone line.

KDDI is the only company that handles models that can be used within Japan. While these phones, of course, can be used to ensure communication in areas with poor reception both within Japan and overseas, the phones are also expected to be used by corporations as a means of communication in emergencies since there is growing demand related to BCPs*.
9555 Features

(1) Compact
This model is around 30% smaller than the previous model (9505A), making it more portable.

(2) Advanced
A separately sold data kit set was required for data communication with the previous model (9595A), but this new model can be used as a stand alone data communication device (data transmission speed of 2.4kbps) since it is equipped with a mini USB port.

(3) Updated antenna structure
The previous model (9504A) had a detachable antenna, but the 9555 model has an antenna that can be folded into the device, giving the phone a sleek design.
