Tokyo, May 23, 2012 - (JCN Newswire) - Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has decided to launch a reorganization of its industrial waste recycling program by integrating recycle programs independently managed by each plant into a companywide comprehensive program, aiming to promote further reductionof industrial waste generated by production processes etc.
SDK is promoting reduction of industrial waste in order to lower the burden on the global environment and contribute to the realization of recycling-based society. Our efforts to reduce industrial waste and maximize the effective use of resources include reuse of waste acids and waste alkalis, reuse of waste oil and waste plastics as fuels and so on. As of May 2012, 9 plants have attained zero emission through these efforts. However, the efficiency of each plant's independent operation to process or recycle industrial waste has reached its limits and, in the company as a whole, 2.2% of annual industrial waste is landfilled.
This time, as the first step to organize companywide recycle program, we will reprocess organic discharges originated from domestic plants through the plastic chemical recycle plant** in SDK's Kawasaki Plant (Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture) to reuse them as raw materials to produce ammonia and liquefied carbon dioxide.
Besides that, SDK will scrutinize the situation of each plant's industrial waste and facilities for waste treatment, and promote companywide recycling of other waste as well as the above mentioned organic discharges. Thetargets of this effort are to attain zero emission by reducing the ratio of landfill to 1% (1200t) or less of annual industrial waste and to reduce the outsourcing cost of industrial waste treatment to 500 million yen, almost half of the current amount.

* Zero emission: Proposed by the United Nations University in 1994, this concept seeks to realize a recycle-based society by reducing the level of emissions and discharges into the environment toward zero through the most efficient resource and energy use possible. SDK defines zero emission as waste treatment with landfill/total-waste ratio of 1% or less.
** Plastic chemical recycle plant: This plant gasifies used plastics at a high temperature.
