Sumitomo Osaka Cement Develops PET-based Optical Filtering Film for Plasma Display Panels

Tokyo, Oct 25, 2005 (JCN) - Sumitomo Osaka Cement has developed Clearas F-Filter (Hybrid-4), a plasma display panel (PDP) optical filter made of a single sheet of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film. The film front surface is coated with an anti-reflection layer, and formed on its back is a meshed layer of an electromagnetic shield.

In addition, featured on the mesh surface are near infrared reflection analysis (NIRA) and color tone adjustment functions, ensuring the simple structure. Unlike the existing products that need dual sheets of optical films, the new filter requires only a single sheet, successfully reducing weight by 50% to about 100g.

The sheet is 140 microns thick, almost half that of the conventional films. The initial market price will be $70 per 42- or 43-inch sheet, and the company wants to lower the price further to $50 in the near future. The company has already begun shipping the new filter in sample quantities to Pioneer and other PDP makers, aiming for commercialization in 2006.
