Tokyo, Nov 3, 2010 (IRG) - KDDI Corp. has announced a partnership with Skype Technologies S.A in bringing its software to mobile phone users subscribed to KDDI's "au" services. The collaboration will make possible free Skype-to-Skype phone calls for those using KDDI's smart phones beginning this month.
Net profit for KDDI's July-September period showed just modest growth, as the strength at its optical broadband and cable television service units made up for its failure to cash in on the smartphone craze. KDDI's net profit for the fiscal second quarter boosted 10.5 percent to 65.05 billion yen ($799 million). Operating profit for the three month period boosted to 118.56 billion yen ($1.5 billion), while revenue declined to 852.42 billion yen ($10.5 billion). Its fixed-line communications segment, which had an 11.6 billion yen ($142 million) operating loss a year earlier, made a 1.71 billion yen ($20.9 million) profit due to lower sales-related costs.
Faced with a sharp decline in its share price, KDDI has announced a plan to spend up to 100 billion yen ($1.2 billion) to buy back its own shares.
