Tokyo, Nov 8, 2011 (JCN) - Asahi Kasei Corp. has reported net sales of 802.2 billion yen for the six month period ended September 30, 2011, up by 4.9% or 37.4 billion yen from the same period last year. Its operating income increased to 63.8 billion yen, ordinary income jumped 4.3% to ?62.1 billion, and net income increased by 34.3% to 38.2 billion yen. The company's strong performance was buoyed by increased deliveries of Hebel Haus unit homes in the Homes segment as well as firm performance in the Chemicals segment.
In the Homes segment, in particular, sales were up by 15.2% from a year ago to ?200 billion, and operating income increased by 77.3% to 17.9 billion yen. Orders for order-built homes increased by 7.7 billion yen to 189.4 billion yen, with deliveries of both Hebel Haus unit homes and Hebel Maison apartment buildings driving growth. In pre-built homes operations, sales of condominiums increased. Housing-related operations also performed well.
In the Chemicals segment, Asahi posted sales growth of 3.5% to 377.8 billion yen. The Health Care segment also performed well, with sales increasing by 3.8% from a year ago to 60 billion yen, and operating income improving by 34.1% to 5.6 billion yen.
In pharmaceuticals operations, an increase in medical representatives resulted in higher selling, general and administrative expenses, while shipments of Recomodulin recombinant thrombomodulin increased substantially. In devices-related operations, the strong yen and lower product prices had an impact on performance in each product category, but shipments of Planova virus removal filters increased substantially.
Asahi Kasei's Fibers division posted sales of 56.1 billion yen for the six-month period, up about 3% from the same period last year. Shipments of Leona nylon 66 filament in tire-cord applications and of Bemberg regenerated cellulose in lining applications were favorable, but high feedstock costs and the strong yen had an impact on performance in each product category.
The company's Electronics segment and Construction Materials division, however, posted losses due to declining product prices and a stronger yen.
