Suzuki, Intelligent Energy to Form JV for Developing, Manufacturing Fuel Cell Systems
Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka, Feb 14, 2012 (JCN) - Suzuki Motor Corp. will establish a 50/50 joint venture (JV) company, SMILE FC System Corp. (SMILE FC), with Intelligent Energy Holdings PLC (IEH) of UK, aimed at developing and manufacturing fuel cell systems.
Both companies have been co-developing fuel cell vehicles, such as motorcycles equipped with air-cooled fuel cell system that have been exhibited at the 2007, 2009 and 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. One of the vehicles, the Burgman Fuel Cell Scooter, earned a Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) in March 2011.
SMILE FC will be based in within Suzuki's headquarters in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, while its research facility will be located at Suzuki's Yokohama Laboratory.
Beginning with the air-cooled fuel cell system, Suzuki and IE, through SMILE FC, will work on developing mass-production technology and manufacturing of fuel cells, as well as enter the global supply chain of fuel cell parts, and promote fuel cell vehicles.
