OFS and Furukawa Collaborate on Optical Comms Products

Tokyo, Mar 12, 2012 (JCN) - Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd and U.S.-based OFS, Specialty Photonics Division have developed and started production of high-output, narrow-linewidth, full-band tunable lasers and integrable tunable laser assemblies (ITLAs), and have started volume production of their HPU 42000 series Raman amplifiers.

The HPU 42000 series Raman amplifiers, which feature built-in automatic gain control (AGC) function, offer ease of system implementation and excellent noise characteristics, which, in combination with erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), improves optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) as well as compensates for optical loss resulting from optical transmission lines and optical components. The devices' built-in AGC function enables constant power per channel, resulting in simplicity as well as better integration in transmission systems.

The tunable lasers and ITLAs are key components in 100 gigabit-per-second (Gb/s) ultra-high speed optical digital coherent transmission systems that are expected to be widely introduced around the world in 2012 and beyond.
