Mitsubishi Corporation Participation in Largest-Class Coffee Plantation in Brazil

Tokyo, Apr 3, 2012 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) acquired 20% stake of Ipanema Coffees and has participated into coffee plantation business in order to stably supply with consumers around the world safe, aromatic, and high-quality Brazilian coffee.

Ipanema Coffees, located at about 300kilometers north from the city of Sao Paulo, own the area of about 60 sq km (a largest-class, equivalent to the area inside the Yamanote loop Line in Tokyo) and produce annually up to 9,200ton (which is equivalent to approximately a billion cups of coffee). In addition to the plantations' fully traceable modern management system which controls, for instance, applied agrochemicals and production records, the plantations are proud of their safe specialty coffees that are been certified by the organizations in the U.S., the Netherlands, and Italy for the plantations' environmental-friendliness and emphasis on the corporate social responsibility.

World coffee demands have been growing over supplies mainly in the emerging countries and the demands of the certified coffees which Ipanema produces have been growing by roughly 10% a year in the developed nations such as the U.S., Euro, and Japan. MC, having over 20 years' business for the Japan market, will delegate a staff to be stationed at the plantations and contribute to the plantations' mechanization, streamlining, and invest on the irrigation system for the purpose of securely supplying high-quality coffee.

MC continues to seek promising business opportunities in Brazil, a geostrategic region under the company's mid-term management plan 2012.
