AGC Lays Cornerstone for First Facility in Brazil, Announces Social Partnerships

Tokyo, Apr 20, 2012 (JCN) - AGC, a manufacturer of glass, chemicals and high-tech materials, today conducted a cornerstone-laying ceremony in Guaratingueta, Sao Paulo State, Brazil, to commemorate the start of construction on its first manufacturing facility in the country.

At the same time, two social partnerships were signed for public education in that city. The first, with the Ayrton Senna Institute on implementing programs that promote a differentiated management education to qualify the system, is designed to reduce illiteracy, school failure and dropout of the students.

The second, between AGC and Casa Betania, an institution that operates since 1976 in the city, will provide professional and technical training to more than 60 young people in areas such as IT, Portuguese, Spanish, English, Mathematics and Accounting, Ethics and Citizenshipand Health and Quality of life.

AGC Vidros do Brasil Ltda., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the AGC Group, will oversee AGC's business activities in Brazil including operation of the facility, under the leadership of President Davide Capellino.

The facility will begin operations starting in 2013, manufacturing architectural and automotive glass. By 2016, the workforce of 500 is scheduled, most of who will behired locally.

By then, the production capacity is expected to reach 220,000 tons of construction glass per year. The facility is also expected to produce automotive glass for 500,000 vehicles per year also by 2016.

The AGC Group, with Tokyo-based Asahi Glass at its core, announced last year an investment of over R$ 800 million to build its first factory in South America. The facility will be the most sustainable glass factory in Brazil featuring the latest technologies from around the world.
