Panasonic Delivers Storage Battery Modules and Battery Monitoring System to Siemens for a Project to Stabilize Power Distribution in Europe

Osaka, June 4, 2012 - (JCN Newswire) - Panasonic Corporation announced today that it has supplied industrial lithium-ion battery modules and monitoring system to Siemens AG, one of the largest Europe-based electrical engineering companies.

The Panasonic batteries are being used as an integral part of Siemens's new SIESTORAGE modular energy storage solution for regulating and stabilizing distribution grids.

Panasonic supplied a total of 280 battery modules with a capacity of 500 kWh (DCB-103E) and battery management system for monitoring the battery modules.

Siemens' SIESTORAGE solution with a capacity of 500 kWh and maximum power of 1 MVA is directly connected to a medium-voltage grid in South Europe.

Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, are gaining in popularity in Europe. On the other hand, their unpredictable nature is creating challenges in stability when incorporated into the public power grid. Storage battery systems are designed to stabilize power supply and their market is expected to grow.

"This project paves the way for Panasonic to supply batteries for the European grid-scale energy storage market in full-swing," said Mr. Fumitoshi Terashima, Director, Smart Energy Systems Business Unit, Energy Company of Panasonic.

"With our state-of-the-art technology of lithium-ion battery, we aim for a leading position in the supply chain for solutions to protect the power grid system which has been under pressure recently due to the massive deployment of solar and wind energy in Europe."

The storage system combines lithium-ion batteries from Panasonic with cutting edge power electronics from Siemens designed to realize optimum control of charge and discharge of electricity from the grid, photovoltaic modules, or other sources.
