NTT Develops Bio-inspired Algorithm for Network Virtualization
Tokyo, Jan 24, 2013 (JCN) - Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT), Osaka University, and The University of Electro-Communications (UEC) have developed a biologically-inspired "Yuragi (fluctuations)" algorithm for virtual network control technology, enabling recovery from large-scale disaster and congestion.
Biological systems, which have complex structures, are driven by fluctuations in response to environmental changes while maintaining lower power consumption. Such a mechanism is called as "Yuragi", which means fluctuations in Japanese. Osaka University has a worldwide reputation for the application of the "Yuragi" algorithm to artificial systems.
With the technology, NTT can provide the rapid recovery of a network service in case of unexpected disasters or congestions. This achievement was in part supported by the Strategic Information and Communications R&D Promotion Programme of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Japan.
A congestion avoidance experiment using the technology will be presented at the JGN-X demonstration event sponsored by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), February 5-7, 2013.
In the demonstration, video streaming traffic will be transferred from Okinawa to Sapporo on JGN-X, and NTT hopes to confirm the rapid recovery from congestion caused by additional background traffic.
