Panasonic Starts Broadband Over Powerline Communication Technology Verification Service Based on US Smart Grid Standard
- NIST of the U.S. Government approved HD-PLC as a part of the Smart Grid Catalog of Standards.
- It also includes approval of BPL coexistence function called ISP (Inter Systems Protocol) proposed by Panasonic as mandatory specification.

Tokyo, Mar 5, 2013 - (JCN Newswire) - Panasonic System Networks Co., Ltd. (PSN), a Panasonic group company, today announced that its HD-PLC(1), a Broadband over Powerline Communication (BPL) Technology, has been approved by the NIST(2) SGIP(3) Catalog of Standards of the United States. The company also announced that it has opened its verification test environment for coexistence to the public.

There are several types of standards based on BPL technologies; however, the instability of communications due to the interference among the different BPL technologies was a serious concern. NIST recognized this as a major issue in the development of the smart grid and dedicated itself to resolving the issue. As the result of its efforts, NIST recently established the "NIST SGIP Catalog of Standards". These guidelines for BPL include the following three specifications which PSN took the lead in promoting their standardization; IEEE 1901(4), the global standard for BPL, ITU-T G.9972(5), the global standard for BPL coexistence function, and NIST IR 7862, the guideline of coexistence implementation which requires that the coexistence function be "always-on".

In order to verify the developed PLC products meet NIST SGIP requirements, Panasonic has made its BPL coexistence verification test environment open to the public, and has started the BPL coexistence testing service.

In order to accelerate the widespread penetration of BPL into the global market, PSN has developed HD-PLC, and also licensed the technologies. With its BPL technology, PSN will continue to contribute to the realization of the smart grid which can manage power demand and visualize energy usage.

(1) HD-PLC: The name of a high-speed power line communication system created by Panasonic Corporation. HD-PLC is a trademark or registered trademark in Japan and other countries.
(2) NIST: Acronym for "National Institute of Standards and Technology". NIST is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce. (3) SGIP: Acronym for "Smart Grid Interoperability Panel". NIST initiated the SGIP to support NIST in fulfilling its responsibility, under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (Title XIII, Section 1305), to coordinate standards development for the Smart Grid. As of April 2012, the SGIP is comprised of over 750 member organizations representing 22 stakeholder categories, including federal agencies as well as state and local regulators. (4) IEEE 1901: IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is a non-profit, professional organization for the advancement of technology related to electricity and electronics. It is the organization responsible for standards such as Ethernet and wireless LAN.
(5) ITU-T G.9972: "Coexistence mechanism for wireline home networking transceivers". Coexistence specifications for power line communications based on IEEE 1901 and ITU-T G.9960/G.9961 are standardized.
