Toyota Tsusho MOU for Feasibility Study on Supplying Desalinated Water in Kenya

Tokyo, Dec 13, 2013 (JCN) - Toyota Tsusho Corporation announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Mombasa County, the Republic of Kenya, to conduct a feasibility study on supplying 100,000 m3/day desalinated water to the Mombasa district. Scheduled to begin in 2017, this will be the first desalination project ever undertaken in Kenya.

Located 450 km southeast of the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, Mombasa is Kenya's sole international trading port. Securing stable water sources is an urgent issue for Kenya as it grapples with limited access to safe water supplies due to capacity shortages of power and water purification facilities.

On August 15, 2012, Toyota Tsusho became the first Japanese company to sign a comprehensive MOU with Kenya to support the achievement of Kenya's national vision, "VISION 2030." Toyota Tsusho is pursuing the water supply initiative as one of the VISION projects.

Mombasa Port is the gateway to Kenya's northern corridor and a vital trading post for east Africa's inland nations (Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, etc.). The northern corridor is one of the five major growth corridors designated to receive development support from the Japanese government. The Kenyan government expects this water supply project to contribute to the economic development of the entire east Africa region.

Toyota Tsusho has designated Kenya a "priority country" and will continue to actively support the Kenyan government's VISION 2030 while investing in a wide range of initiatives to contribute to the country's development.
