SDK to Raise Prices for Aluminum Hydroxide and Alumina

Tokyo, May 30, 2012 - (JCN Newswire) - Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has decided to increase its prices for aluminum hydroxide and alumina, and started discussions with customers.

Specifically, the price for aluminum hydroxide is to be raised by US$90/m.t. or more as from shipments on June 1, 2012; the price for alumina by US$130/m.t. or more as from shipments on June 1, 2012; and the price for fused alumina by US$190/m.t. or more as from shipments on July 1, 2012.

SDK has worked to increase production efficiency and made other efforts to reduce costs. As the costs of raw materials and fuels remain at high levels, however, it is not possible for SDK to fully absorb the increased costs through its own efforts. Thus, SDK has concluded that it has no alternative but to ask its customers to bear part of the cost increase in order to ensure the stable supply of its aluminum hydroxide and alumina.

Aluminum hydroxide is used as flocculant for water treatment and flame-retardant filler for resins, in addition to the use as raw material for alumina production. Meanwhile, alumina is used as raw material for the production of ceramics, such as refractories and abrasives.
