Fujitsu and Bright House Networks Achieve 400G and 800G Transmission Speeds Over Live Network Environment; Setting Future Path for Terabit Speeds

Tokyo, Mar 12, 2014 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu, a leading provider of business, information technology, and communications solutions, announced today that Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. and Bright House Networks successfully trialed Fujitsu's 400G transport technology, increasing flexibility of the cable systems' existing network. The trial was Fujitsu's first 400G trial with a cable operator, and was conducted in a live network using Fujitsu's 400G optical networking transceivers over the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet Optical Networking Platforms (Packet ONPs).

Bright House Networks is the sixth largest owner and operator of cable systems in the U.S., offering its approximately 2.5 million customers video, high-speed data and voice services. The cable provider is committed to continually evolving its network infrastructure to meet customer needs. Bright House Networks' customers are interested in services such as interactive Web capabilities, Video on Demand (VOD) to any connected device, HD and HD+ video, and more.

"Our work with Fujitsu allows us to further advance our current transport infrastructure, from 10G to 100G and now 400G and beyond," said Craig Cowden, Senior Vice President, Network Engineering, Operations and Enterprise Solutions, Bright House Networks. "Our technology is part of people's lives, so we continually invest in our network to deliver new and innovative solutions. This initiative provides us with the ability to upgrade the amount of bandwidth available on our existing DWDM infrastructure to support the ever-increasing High Speed Data requirements of our customers and new initiatives, such as fiber to the home, for years to come."

Using FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP and 400G Super Channel Solutions, Bright House Networks is able to optimize their existing equipment and infrastructure and manage capital expenditures as they transition to greater bandwidth as market demands increase. Fujitsu successfully demonstrated delivery of 400G technology over hardware that is currently shipping. Upon completing the 400G trial, an error-free rate of 800G was also attempted and achieved - maximizing the potential of future networking capabilities while showing their commitment to leveraging customers' investment in their networks.

"For over a decade we've been delighted to work with and support Bright House Networks, one of North America's leading MSOs," said Paul Fagan, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Fujitsu Network Communications. "Helping our customers build cost effective, state of the art networks is core to our optical heritage. As bandwidth growth continues to accelerate, the need for innovative network technologies is parmount. The transmission of 400G and 800G Super Channel over Bright House Network's existing network provides validation and a path to helping them deliver world class service and experience to their customers."

The field trial demonstrated several key technical advancements which lead to the next generation of optical transmission. Fujitsu's 400G and 800G Super Channel capabilities enable higher per-channel scalability; support for adaptive modulation schemes including DP-QPSK and DP-16QAM, which opens up the ability to optimize spectral efficiency while accommodating dynamically changing reach demands. And, increased spectral efficiency was achieved with Nyquist filtering techniques reducing optical signal bandwidth. Fujitsu demonstrated its nonlinear compensation (NLC) techniques to reduce the resulting optical penalties and extend the achievable transmission distance to overcome nonlinear fiber impairments due to optical transmission.
