DNP Develops Security Application for Safe M2M Communications

Tokyo, Mar 14, 2014 (JCN) - Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) announced the development of a security application targeting Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications that send and receive data between equipment connected to the network. By installing a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card loaded with this application, or a secure module, into the M2M equipment it is possible to protect data sent and received between such equipment, prevent tampering and realize a secure environment.

M2M equipment and the application market has grown sharply, and has been adopted in a variety of usage scenes, including services providing emergency calls for road accidents, smart grids, remote surveillance, point-of-sales (POS) systems, and various forms of automation. In the future, other sophisticated uses are planned, such as settlement systems at charging stations for electric vehicles, and those that take measurement data from home-based health care equipment and use it for medical purposes.

When handling the necessary data for settlement purposes or personal data used in health care situations, there are rapid increases in security needs for protecting data sent and received between equipment in the M2M usage environment, along with the prevention of tampering and identity theft. To reply to these needs, DNP developed a new security application to check the presence of invalid tampering with M2M equipment.

The newly developed application is loaded onto an IC chip that is both physically and logically difficult to internally analyze. Apart from secure chips for removable media, such as SIM cards inserted into smart phones and high security microsSD memory cards, it is also possible to mount them on semiconductor -type secure chips for implementing with modules.

By internalizing these into equipment used in M2M, when booting the equipment it is possible to detect invalid modification of the equipment, or data tampering by operating them with in conjunction with internal applications and various matching check data that display equipment status, in a similar process to "secure boots" executed when a PC boots up. By combining this with a client authentication application that testifies usable equipment, it is also possible to prevent identity theft.

Mounting client authentication applications, such as existing SIMs, on the same secure chip as the newly developed application, removes the need for loading multiple secure chips, which in turn makes it feasible to reduce introduction costs.

Beginning with communications carriers, DNP will offer this new application to service providers that operate M2M businesses using information terminals, settlement terminals, along with medical and healthcare equipment.

It is also planing to market generic semiconductor-type secure chips loaded with the new application, and M2M secure modules equipped with functions allowing for easy connection with M2M cloud.

In addition to putting the newly developed application on a commercial footing in the year beginning April 1, 2015, it will also be broadly offered to services that analyze collected data, while an operation-oriented Business Process Outsourcing service will be offered to the communication, financial, electrical power and retail industries, aiming for sales of 1.0 billion yen from M2M and peripheral businesses in the year ending March 31, 2018.
